Despite the passage of the “Attendance for Success Act” (AFSA) in 2019, schools struggled to combat high absenteeism rates, reaching 40 percent in the 2021-2022 school year. The AFSA introduced a tiered approach to address absenteeism, but challenges such as understaffed attendance offices and issues at home have prompted recommendations for increased investment in attendance staff and improved data collection.

Eligible licensed teachers may receive up to $6,000 per year for two years to repay their student debt. Last year, over 950 teachers benefited from the program, and this year’s budget allocates $5 million to continue the program. Public education officials emphasize the program's importance in retaining high-quality educators and encourage all K-12 teachers to consider applying. Preference is given to teachers from underrepresented backgrounds and those in high-need positions. Applications can be submitted electronically on the New Mexico Higher Education Department's website.
