Pursuit of Educational Equity: The Yazzie-Martinez Impact https://nmeducation.org/the-yazzie-martinez-impact/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 23:01:40 +0000 https://nmeducation.org/?p=5103 In 2018, Judge Sarah Singleton ruled that the State of New Mexico violated students' fundamental rights by not providing a sufficient public education as mandated by the state constitution. The court found that New Mexico students have a right to be college-and career-ready, but the state was not meeting this standard, particularly for economically disadvantaged students, English language learners, students with disabilities, and Native American students. The ruling led to ongoing efforts by the state to improve its education system, including increased funding, expanded pre-kindergarten programs, and addressing teacher shortages. Despite some progress, challenges remain, and advocacy groups continue to push for further improvements to ensure educational equity for all students in the state. 2023 marks the fifth anniversary of Yazzie-Martinez court ruling.
